The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) made it a compulsory requirement that all schools are assessed against a Financial Management Standard. Schools are required to submit for assessment a file of evidence. Effective financial management is essential for schools in order that they can:
Exercise proper control and stewardship over the significant amounts of public funding entrusted to them.
Allocate and deploy resources effectively to meet school priorities for development and improvement.
Financial Management Standard in Schools
The Government in England wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched their Sustainable Schools Framework in 2006 when the then Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP set out challenging long-term aspirations for schools to mainstream learning about sustainable development issues and sustainable practices into everyday school life.
Eco-Schools - Silver Award
One hundred and seventy-six schools across the county have now completed travel plans as part of their contribution to making school journeys more environmentally friendly. Schools that have really taken on board their travel plans are awarded Silver and Gold Awards to recognise their achievements, reducing car use on the school journey and promoting walking and cycling to school.
